Dr. Smith was born and raised in the Baltimore area. He received his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree and a masters degree at West Virginia University as well as serving as captain of the varsity tennis team. He then attended the University of Maryland Dental School where he was elected class president for each of the four years attended. Following a general practice residency at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Dr. Smith returned to Maryland and completed his residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery from the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1982. He began his private practice in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Hunt Valley in 1982.
He is a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon (diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery), fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and member of numerous national professional dental organizations including the American Dental Association, the Middle Atlantic Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Maryland State Dental Association.
Hobbies and interests include tennis, flying, and golf. In addition to practicing oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Smith has served as Vice President of Sinclair Broadcasting since 1990 and its Director since 1986. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Sinclair Ventures, Inc., the Freven Foundation, Gerstell Academy, University of Maryland at Baltimore Foundation, St. Joseph's Hospital, The Sinclair Relief Fund, Bay Television Inc., Cunningham Communications Inc., Gerstell Development, LP, Keyser Investment Group, Inc. and Beaver Dam, LLC. Dr. Smith served as a member of the Board of Directors of Safe Waterways in Maryland until 2009.
